How to Choose a Kayak

Well for me I thought this would be pretty easy.

The criteria was - doesn't fill with water; no Eskimo roll required; stability on water; cost.
3 days later searching online, it was still a difficult choice but as Anaconda had a sale on (like everyone does these days, lol) we went out and bought 2 Seak Swift sit-ons. We got a pretty good deal with the paddles, pfds and seat rests - and at least we can be out on Sydney's Middle Harbour - can't wait - for the summer.

Now we have a Prado, so thought it would be an easy job getting 2 (and hopefully 3, when we get a Tandem so the 4 of us can go out.) Not so - it took the 2 guys from the shop and Edwin nearly an hour to load the things onto the roofbars. And I'm thinking - how on earth am I going to manage to get a kayak on and off the roof by myself?

An autoloader may be the answer, but they are easily far more than the cost of all the gear plus one kayak. So we have shelved that one for now and bought 2 Rhino kayak holders, and will add a third when we get a tandem.

I'll post a piccy of the kayaks on board the tank (aka Prado) soon, after my first adventure!
Do your own homework when investing in a Kayak - there is lots of advice out there, here is one example:
And I think most people agree, you should probably always 'try before you buy' - which around the Sydney area is pretty easy as a lot of the stores have access to water and let you try them.
A great alternative is to try somewhere that has a wide range of kayaks for hire and get paddling, which will also help you determine which type of kayak is best for you.
